News from Our D-E Website: 2012 Green Cup Challenge is Best Ever!

Dwight-Englewood School recently concluded its participation in the 2012 Green Cup Challenge® (GCC), As one of nearly 120 schools involved nationwide, D-E earned record results this year, reducing electricity consumption by an average of 5%!

Rachel Porth '12, D-E's lead student coordinator for the GCC and a member of the Environmental Club,  reported the following final results:  "Overall the Challenge saved one million kilowatt-hours and 1.5 million pounds of CO2.  We finished the month down over 5%, our best Green Cup Challenge (thus far). (D-E) saved about 9000 kilowatt-hours, (translating into approximately) 6 tons of CO2 and other types of pollution."

She continued: "D-E as a whole not only placed fifth in the mid-Atlantic division, but also reduced our energy consumption by 5.2% since last year. During the first two weeks of the Challenge alone our school saved 4700 kWh which is the amount of electricity that a typical house would use in six months. Not only did we compete on a national level, but we also had an interdivision competition among the Lower, Middle, and Upper schools as well. This year the Lower School came in first place, reducing their energy consumption by 7% with the Upper School coming in second and the Middle School coming in third."

Girls Varsity Basketball Team Coach Matthew Larrowe commented, "I am very proud of my team and this accomplishment. We played very well on defense especially in the second half as we held them to 2 points in the last 12 minutes of the game. Haley Brescia '13 had 12 points, 6 steals, and 3 assists. April Flaim (also) had a very solid game with 11 points and 11 rebounds. We all played solid defense and it was great win for the ladies and the program."

Our No. 5-seeded Bulldogs also earned a decisive 71-41 victory over No. 12-seeded Immaculate Conception HS of Montclair, in their home game this past Tuesday. Coach and D-E Athletics Director Eli Goldberger noted: "Montclair scored the first seven points of the game but, the Bulldogs (21-4) rallied and held a 12-9 lead at the end of the first quarter and never looked back. Junior Keion Osbourne connected on 4 three pointers including one from NBA three point range to end the second quarter to give the Bulldogs a 10 point halftime advantage. In the third period seniors Wesley Dickinson and Brian Breslin sparked a 23-5 run in which Dickinson and Breslin combined to score 16 of the bulldogs 23 third quarter points. Dickinson finished with a game high 25 points and 14 rebounds while Breslin added 11 points and 5 assists."

A Message to New Students from the Middle School Honor Code Committee

Welcome to the Dwight-Englewood Middle School! We are very excited for you to join our community. We hope you enjoy your experience at the Middle School. However, we would like to inform you about the Middle School Honor Code. This Honor Code consists of acting with honor, integrity, and respect for others.  This Honor Code has not only helped the students, but it has also helped the teachers and faculty because it builds a foundation of trust between the students and teachers.

The code serves as an expression of the School’s values and basic rights that are shared and practiced by the students, faculty, and staff. The Honor Code provides guidelines for our Middle School community while allowing individual freedom of choice. It represents the Middle School’s commitment to fostering integrity and to teaching and promoting honor and trust within our community. The Honor Code signing ceremony will be held at the start of the school year.

The Honor Code reads as follows:

“I, a member of the Dwight-Englewood Middle School, choose to live by this code. I promise to act with honor and integrity to help build a stronger community. In doing so, I will not lie, cheat, or steal. I will respect the people and environment around me by not making any member of this community feel uncomfortable. I will respect myself, my community, and my integrity.”

We hope that you will help our community and live by this Honor Code as a Middle School student.

Andrew Nemr Visits D-E for Black History Month Assembly

In a wonderful twist, Upper School students were addressed by nationally renowned tap dance, Andrew Nemr for the annual Black History Month assembly.  The assembly contextualized black history as American History.  Sharing that black history has relevance to everyone, Nemr built on the theme by performing tap dance routines.  He surprised the audience when he collaborated on an impromptu jazz piece with D-E's own Daryl Johns '14.  Here's a clip of the performance which they entitled This Is Jazz - This Is America.

Congratulations to Olivia Britton '14 and Taryn Daniels '13 for organizing a memorable assembly.

Tensions Persist in the Admissions Committee Room

We're counting down as we complete Admissions Committee decisions for Round 1 applicants.  As Sunday's Superbowl nears, it's also becoming much more clear where the team allegiances lie.  Pictured below are Head of School, Dr. Rodney De Jarnett and Upper School Principal, Joseph Algrant.  There is no guessing about who is rooting for the Patriots and for the Giants.  Team adoration aside, the Committee made great progress and Admissions Committee decisions will be sent out by February 10 for all completed applications.

Gillian Garcia '13 Shares Reflections from the D-E StringJam Tour to D.C.

We arrived in DC and almost immediately went to practice before our concert later on in the night. The concert was at a Presbyterian church that was near American University. We were excited to meet another string group named the Suzuki Strings. It was nice to meet other people who had similar interests. After practicing for a few hours we finally got to perform. The concert was well attended, and we did an awesome job! On Saturday, we did not have a performance; so we had time to do some fun stuff around DC. We went to the National Gallery and then at night went to see the National Symphony preform. The concert was especially interesting because it featured a glass harmonica!

On Sunday, we got up very early and checked out of the hotel; however we had one last performance. I was most excited for this one because it was at the church right next to the White House. Countless presidents have visited this church and there was a chance that a politician would be attending the Sunday service in which we were performing. During our last piece I sensed some commotion and realized that President George H. W. Bush. was sitting in the audience! It was truly an amazing end to the tour.

D-E Soccer Superstar, Rachel Cole '12 signs her NLI to Rutgers

Rachel Cole '12 made Dwight-Englewood School (D-E) history yet again, by signing her Letter of Intent (NLI) to Rutgers University, where she will play Division I Soccer. Flanked by family and friends, including her parents Peter and Barbara, her sister Caitlin, and Varsity Girls Soccer Coach Ed Ballas, Cole was obviously quite proud to be wearing a Rutgers "R" shirt and red "R" hat.

Rachel Cole pictured immediately after signing her NLI to Rutgers U. Back row from left to right are: D-E Head of School Dr. De Jarnett; D-E AD Eli Goldberger; D-E Upper School Principal Joseph Algrant; D-E Girls Varsity Soccer Coach Eddie Ballas. Front row from left to right are: Peter Cole (Rachel's father); Rachel Cole D-E '12; Barbara Cole (Rachel's mother); and Caitlin Cole (Rachel's sister).  For the full story, click here for the News & Events section of the D-E website.

Notes from Inside the Admissions Committee Room

We're excited to have received so many wonderful applications for admissions this year.  Not only is the number of applications received to date higher than last year, the quality of the applicants in the pool is exceptional!  To focus on the review, members of our Admissions Team - Joni Hartsough, Victoria Adamo and I have packed up our files and moved into a temporary space, which we have dubbed the "Admissions Committee Room" where all applicants' records are being read.

Members of the committees have been averaging about 200 pages of reading per night since our school re-opened in January after break.  We have spent as much as 12 hours per week together in the room so that we may have all first round decisions out to families by February 10.  It's been a wonderful adventure to share with our colleagues all the terrific talent and energy our applicants potentially will bring to our community in September.

And only occasionally do we get distracted from the files...Joseph Algant, our Upper School principal, has adopted a running theme for his admissions committee attire as he continues to don very special NY Giants caps - see photo below as well as a previous blog.   We have come to refer to Mr. Algrant's apparel as his "thinking cap" which only stirs the ire of New England fans in the room.

Admissions notifications for completed applications will be mailed by February 10.  If you would like to know whether your application is complete, check out the online Admissions Tracker or call Alice Rollo at 201-569-9500 ext. 3500.
