D-E Rocks with Jazz Rock!

"House of the Rising Sun" (Turner/Martin) was performed by Rachel Hechler.

D-E School's Winter Break started on a high note yet again this year, with the performance of the annual D-E Jazz Rock concert.   More than 40 students showcased their singing and instrumental talents, first to a Middle School audience and then again to Upper School students in Schenck Auditorium.  From rock and roll anthems to contemporary pop, students performed songs from many different genres. The ensemble was led by Director Robert DeBellis, along with vocal coordinator Matthew Schukis and strings teacher Annaliesa Place.  The student performers took on vocals, strings, guitar, keyboard, bass, drums and even horns for a show that easily fulfilled a D-E School tradition of a memorable, exciting experience.

To enjoy one of the many performances, click here:

Some of the songs that were performed to the extremely enthusiastic and appreciative audience included renditions of “Who Did You Think I Was” (Mayer) by junior Daniel Shlien; “Fidelity” (Spektor) by sophomore Heather Braverman, and "Good Girl" (Underwood) by sophomore Melissa Rosner.  Audiences were equally (and audibly!) delighted by the smooth sounds of junior Nigel Lassiter performing "Try a Little Tenderness" ((Campbell/Connelly/Woods).   For junior Gina Marie Enriquez’s performance of “Addicted to You” by Shakira, sung in both Spanish and English, she was joined on stage by a full band that included D-E alumnus, Danny Chang ’12, on percussion. Danny and GinaMaria also danced the merengue during her song. The entire Jazz Rock ensemble then ended up on stage for the finale, a performance of "One" (Blige) featuring vocalists Sofia Joseph '14 and vocalist/guitarist Jacob Seeger '14.

This year's Jazz Rock ensemble members are noted below.  Here's to all our wonderful student performers!

D-E Admissions - Step-by-Step

What a terrific fall this has been for us in admissions.  To date, we have welcomed well over 500 guests to campus.  And we realize that families may asking, "What do we do now?"  We understand that the Admissions process can be confusing.  We hope the following information helps your family navigate the next steps.

As for the application process, we encourage you to use our Admissions Online Site to navigate the process.  There are several easy steps, which we have outlined below to give you an overall sense of what you can anticipate:

Step A - Submit the Parent/Student Admissions Application
Application for admission along with the $65 non-refundable application fee must be submitted to the Admissions Office prior to the parent and student visits. You may elect to use the electronic application or to print out and submit paper version from the Admissions Online Site.
Step B - Contact the Admissions Office to Set up the Required Student Visit/Parent Tour & Interview
Interviews are given Monday through Thursday, and are by appointment only. Please call our office at (201)569-9500 ext. 3500 to speak with Alice Rollo to schedule your appointment.  At this point, only January appointments are available for the Middle and Upper Schools.  There are a limited number of interview appointments still available in December for Lower School applicants.
Step C - Complete the Application by Submitting all Other Required Components
The deadline for submission of completed applications is December 31, 2012 for grades 6-11 and January 15, 2013 for pre-k - grade 5.  The following components comprise the student’s application and must all be submitted prior to any consideration for admission:
1.THE APPLICATION (Parent and Student - see above)
2. CONFIDENTIAL RECOMMENDATION FORMS: Current Math and English Teachers and Guidance Counselor/Principal forms are required from your child’s current school and should be completed after December 1 in order for the teachers to have a chance to assess the student’s performance accurately. Confidential recommendation forms should be mailed directly from you child’s current school.  The completed recommendations should be received by D-E no later than January 15.
3. TRANSCRIPT REQUEST: To be signed by the student’s parent and mailed to his/her current school.   The transcript should be received by D-E no later than January 15.
4. TESTING: Results from the WPPSI III or WISC-IV (for grades 4Y - 4) or  Independent School Entrance Examination (ISEE) or Secondary School Admissions Test (SSAT) (for grades 5 - 11) should be submitted to the Admissions Office. When registering for the test, families must request the testing service to forward results directly to Dwight-Englewood School.
5. GRADED WRITING SAMPLE:  For students applying to the Upper School (grades 9 - 11), a sample of the student's writing which has been produced within the last year is required.  The Admissions Committee requests to see marked up copies of the student's work.   The graded writing sample should be received by D-E no later than January 15.

D-E Celebrates Great Art

Just in time for our School's Annual Winter Arts Festival, D-E has received new sculptures on loan from world-reknowned artists to display throughout campus.  As our own students prepare to exhibit their own creations, the sculptures serve as a reminder of the value of art to this community.  Please join us for our Winter Arts Festival on Sunday, December 8 (Middle School) or Sunday, December 15 (Upper School).  Performances begin at 2:00 in Schenck Auditorium.  Student artwork will be displayed for viewing outside throughout the Klein Center.

Listed below are links to the artists websites, which provide more information about the works on loan to the School. This marks our second year collaborating with the New York Sculptor's Guild, and this year we are featuring a piece by non guild members, Einar and Jaime De La Torre, international glass artists & sculptors. Our very own resident artist and teacher, Ms. Diaz has worked with them for the past two summers and painted the eyes on the recent piece that is on loan to Dwight-Englewood for this exhibit. (It is a small piece located outside of Head of School, Dr. De Jarnett's office.)

Thanksgiving Assembly Celebrates Traditions, Words

Head of School Dr. Rodney V. De Jarnett was joined earlier this week by a 'king', a 'queen', a 'turkey', and dozens of others to help to keep the tradition of the annual D-E All-School Thanksgiving Assembly vibrantly alive, blending memorable music, dance, and the spoken word.

To kick off the holiday season, the entire school gathered in the Large Gym in Modell's Sports Complex for the annual Thanksgiving Assembly, packed with various performances and videos. After the Lower, Middle and Upper Schools settled into their seats, the Upper School Orchestra performed Mozart's Symphony No. 25 in G Minor, featured in the 1984 movie "Amadeus", under the direction of Performing Arts Department Chair Mr. John Littlefield.

Next, Dr. De Jarnett introduced the underlying theme of the assembly - spoken word. He then showed two videos of poets David Bowden and Sarah Kay.  These poets' video clips, "Start Something that Matters" (Bowden) and "If I Should Have a Daughter" (Kay), inscribed some inspirational words to the audience before the Lower School Chorus sang "Children of the World", with Ms. Milbauer conducting and Ms. Montroy at the keyboard.

Two more videos were shown: the first of an Animated Optical Illusion, the second an additional Sarah Kay video, "Hands", which addressed the fact that "hands learn more than minds do."

Then came a favorite of every Thanksgiving Assembly -- a visit from the Thanksgiving Assembly King, Queen and a Turkey.  Lower School music teacher Mary Heveran told the story of how Bert the Turkey danced his way to live another day, winning the approval of the King and Queen.  Lower School students Macri Leanza '22 (King)  Ally Abramson '23 (Queen) and Ben Tausner '22 (Turkey) were crowd pleasers as they then enacted the story.

D-E's own spoken word group 3-Amigos (seniors Dan Garcia, Austin James and Avery Landau) then took the stage to share their original poem on giving thanks.  They were followed by Alex De Los Reyes '13 and other Upper School student members of CODES (Community Outreach at Dwight-Englewood School), along with several students from the Lower and Middle Schools, who reported on their Thanksgiving Food Drive efforts earlier this week  The students collected a truckload full of non-perishable food items and toiletries, along with gift cards, which were symbolically presented to Mr. Scottt Reddin of the Center for Food Action. Mr. Reddin expressed sincere appreciation on behalf of the Center for D-E School's annual tradition of giving food and monetary gifts to this critically important cause.

Student Government President Ben Kaufman '13 then thanked the maintenance crew for their work in getting the school campus back to normal following Super Storm Sandy, before switching hats to introduce an original video created by D-E's student satirical group The Flea.

The final performance of the assembly had the Jazz Rock Ensemble featuring Nigel Lassiter '14 singing lead and Kylah Gonzalez '13 as lead backup, which left the audience with a warm feeling of gratefulness and much to be thankful for during this Thanksgiving break.

Dear Member of the Dwight-Englewood School Community,

It is with great pleasure and excitement that I write to tell you that I will be visiting Asia from July 3 to July 13.  I will be accompanied by my wife Annette, my daughter Ali, Director of Admissions Dr. Sherronda Brown and Director of Development Patricia Boig.  With the help of the Dwight-Englewood Korean Parents Association, as well as the Chang Family, we will be hosting a number of events in Korea and China, which we hope our student, alumni, and parents will choose to attend.  Our hope at these events is to learn more about two major areas from which we receive students and talk to our families and friends in Seoul and Beijing about the wonderful things that are happening at our School.

In Seoul on Wednesday, July 4, at 7:30 A.M. there will be a Men’s Breakfast with me and a Ladies Breakfast with my wife, Dr. Brown and Ms. Boig.  Both of these breakfasts will be held in the Grand InterContinental Hotel.  At 10:30 A.M., we look forward to meeting our Current Students and Alumni in the Lobby of the Intercontinental Coex Hotel and to have the students take us on a walking tour of Seoul and have lunch.  This will be our only real opportunity to see the sights of Seoul and it will be wonderful to have the students show us their city.

On Thursday, July 5, we will host a Family Dinner at 6:30 P.M. at the Restaurant Sketchbook in Kooan. All family members have been formally invited to join us for this most enjoyable event.  We are so pleased to have the help of the Korean Parents Association for this trip and particularly want to thank Youjin Chung, Becky Hwang and Jennifer Kang for their help in planning these events.  All of us are so enthusiastic to learn more about Korea and to see the country from where so many of our students come.

With the help of Jojo and Tina Chang, we will be hosting a reception for our current and prospective students, alumni and families on July 7 at 3:30 P.M. in the Courtyard at the Hilton Wangfujing, 8 Wangfujing East St., Dongcheng, Beijing.

D-E Gets an Additional Bulldog

One of the newest members of the D-E community, Nina has truly taken on the "spirit of the bulldog."  She and her family recently adopted Raleigh - pictured below.  Given that Nina lives in walking distance from the school, it is certainly possible for her to walk Raleigh, the bulldog to campus sports events when she begins Middle School in September.  Congratulations to Nina and her family on the addition of Raleigh to the family.  We're looking forward to meeting her soon.

New Seventh Grade Student Makes Some Important Connections

I love a pleasant surprise.  I suppose that's true for most people including one of today's Admissions Vistitors, Victoria who will be joining Dwight-Englewood's seventh grade class in the fall.  When I greeted Victoria and her mom this morning, they shared that their neighbor who happened to be riding the same elevator today is a current third grade teacher here at D-E.  What a coincidence and a nice surprise for Victoria to learn that she would not only be crossing the River from New York City each morning with fellow students, but also with a trusted neighbor.  She and her mom remarked with amazement that the travel time was only 14 minutes door-to-door.

As I checked in on Victoria who spent the day shadowing with Amina, a sixth grader, we decided to pay Miss Sussman a visit in her classroom.  Once there, Victoria was warmly greeted by third graders - with one student seeking Victoria's assistance in drawing a picture.  Miss Sussman went on to explain to Victoria that seventh graders have "buddy" relationships with members of the third grade class, and that as a student next year she would be helping out as she did today.  Victoria commented that she was excited to have made some many important connections today.

If you are an Admissions Candidate and interested in visiting, we invite you to schedule a day by calling the Admissions Office at 201-569-9500 ext. 3500.  Perhaps there are some important and pleasantly surprising connections that can be made.

News from Our D-E Website: 2012 Green Cup Challenge is Best Ever!

Dwight-Englewood School recently concluded its participation in the 2012 Green Cup Challenge® (GCC), As one of nearly 120 schools involved nationwide, D-E earned record results this year, reducing electricity consumption by an average of 5%!

Rachel Porth '12, D-E's lead student coordinator for the GCC and a member of the Environmental Club,  reported the following final results:  "Overall the Challenge saved one million kilowatt-hours and 1.5 million pounds of CO2.  We finished the month down over 5%, our best Green Cup Challenge (thus far). (D-E) saved about 9000 kilowatt-hours, (translating into approximately) 6 tons of CO2 and other types of pollution."

She continued: "D-E as a whole not only placed fifth in the mid-Atlantic division, but also reduced our energy consumption by 5.2% since last year. During the first two weeks of the Challenge alone our school saved 4700 kWh which is the amount of electricity that a typical house would use in six months. Not only did we compete on a national level, but we also had an interdivision competition among the Lower, Middle, and Upper schools as well. This year the Lower School came in first place, reducing their energy consumption by 7% with the Upper School coming in second and the Middle School coming in third."

Congratulations to the Boys' and Girls' Varsity Basketball Teams!

The Lady Bulldogs (No. 12 seed) had a significant 42-19 win in Tuesday's away game against Kent Place School (No. 5 seed). Girls Varsity Basketball Team Coach Matthew Larrowe commented, "I am very proud of my team and this accomplishment. We played very well on defense especially in the second half as we held them to 2 points in the last 12 minutes of the game. Haley Brescia '13 had 12 points, 6 steals, and 3 assists. April Flaim (also) had a very solid game with 11 points and 11 rebounds. We all played solid defense and it was great win for the ladies and the program."

Our No. 5-seeded Bulldogs also earned a decisive 71-41 victory over No. 12-seeded Immaculate Conception HS of Montclair, in their home game this past Tuesday. Coach and D-E Athletics Director Eli Goldberger noted: "Montclair scored the first seven points of the game but, the Bulldogs (21-4) rallied and held a 12-9 lead at the end of the first quarter and never looked back. D-E Valentine's Evening Performance with Mega Rock Group, Foreigner

Matthew Schukis
Dwight-Englewood School performers celebrated Valentine’s Day with Foreigner at BergenPAC.  Select members of our very own D-E Chorus, Jazz Rock, and a cappella groups (Dwight Mix and Treblemakers) sang to a packed house with Foreigner as backup vocalists for their #1 Billboard Hit, “I Wanna Know What Love Is.”  "It's a real honor to have our students performing on stage with Foreigner," said vocal instructor,  Matthew Schukis.
